A deep westerly depression has continued to cover New Zealand. Very cold, sovere weather has been' experienced almost generally over tho week-end, strong westerly winds to gales prevailing, backing at times to south-west at many places. Rain has fallen In nearly all districts. There has been snow over a wide area in tho South Island, with many heavy falls in Otago and Southland and on the western ranges. At 9 a.m. to-day it was still snowing at many stations in the South Island, and at Taihape In the North Island, but the weather was mainly clear along tho east coast between East Cape and Oamaru.
