' "Evening Post," 20th January. Butter stocks held in the United Kingdom to-day are low in comparison with those at this time last year, and should have a hardening influence on the mar- • ket. The Empire Marketing Board's estimate of stocks of all butters in store as at loth July is 797,660 boxes as against 1,188,391 boxes at the same date last year. The Dairy Board reports that New Zealand butter stocks in the United Kingdom are 5050 tons, compared with 11,500 tons at this time last year. While stocks last year were so much higher, the price for New Zealand was better than it is to-day, being 134s to 136s for salted, compared with 113s to 115s and for special lines 1163. tmsalted butters also show a heavy decline in price on those current in July of last year. Duty or no duty, the Canadian butter market to-day would be of no use to the New Zealand exporter, the Canadian domestic price -being well below what New Zealand producers are receiving in New Zealand and for export. Canadian butter landed m the United Kingdom last week was equal to 7400 boxes, and ,this week 5800 boxes are expected, and the price is 110s per cwt, c.i.t, or 4s to 5s per cwt cheaper than New Zealand is realising in the London market Canada is now a. competitor with New Zealand .in the British butter market ■ ' Imported cheese stocks held in the United.
