some useful; gallops

(By Telegraph.) . (Special to "The Evening, Post. )

PALMERSTON N.,

This Day;

The improvement in the weather- has already effected, a. big alteration in the track conditions 'at Awapuni, and although the horses were "going into it", on Saturday, morning, there is every prospect that the going will" be good for the opening day o£ the Manawatu Meeting /on Wednesday. ■ , ' . J. T. Morris, of Marton, is already on the scene of action, with Nightmare and Jiu Jazz, and S. Cleaver, of Waverley, is also here, with Day Lass. The sue cess of Nightmare prevents her from contesting the Raugiotu Plate. The outside of the course proper was open to fast workers, and Royal Black (W. Broughton) strode along over seven furlongs, the last six furlongs being covered in lmin 29 2-ssecy after the run from the six to the three furlongs post had been done in 44sec. . , , . ' Blue Paper'(W. Bell), who is looking very well, ran six furlongs in lmin ?9 1-Ssec without being asked to give of her Day Lass (Chisholm) led Gueress (Bell) and King's Counsel (Blanche) at the close of a mile run in 2min 4scc. The first named liad a decided advantage in the weights, but she did her work well. Moutoa Treasury (Metcalf) jumped away at the mile post to run the first two furlongs in 29 2-ssec, five in lmin 16 2-5 sec, and the full journey in 2min 3 3-ssec. She did not stride out so freely as usual. Park Acre (Boyd) had a slight advantage over Decree Nisi (Chisholm) and Patearoa (light boy), with Jean Ladosio (Bell) and Manawatu (Metcalf) further back, at the close of a five-furlong task. The first two furlongs were left behind in 28 2-ssee, and the full distance in lmin 12 2-ssec. Jean Ladosio was the early leader, being joined by Patearoa crossing the top, but Pink Acre and. Decree Nisi finished more strongly. - x AMONG THE JUMPERS. Desert Lad (Gordon) showed the way to Gambler (A. E. Stratton). and Brown Abbey (Kobinson) on the flat in a round over the battens, but was apt to ■• prop at his'fences, His companions closed on him crossing the_ top, but' Desert Lad again drew clear in the run home. Gambler cast a shoo before setting off, -and then burst the surcingle during the running. Evening Hero (Robinson) and ■ Spearmiss (Chrystall) were companions over.a round, but the faster jumping of the former saw him gain the advantage-at every fence, and lie was well clear at the close. GENERAL ITEMS. Merry. Damon and Merry Melody, both of whom raced at Trentham on Wednesday, were restricted to easy tasks. Nightmare and Jiu Jazz, members of J. T. Morris's team, were restricted to paeework on the sand, which was in great order. ' , Day Lass, who has been physicked, and the unnamed Star .Stream-r-Maisie Bell, who is suffering from a cold, will, not fulfill their engagements. ... Blacksmith, who scored an overdue success in the Ladies' Bracelet, at Hastings, has 'been" sent' .through ;to Gisbbrne. to contest the' hurdle events- at the East Coast fixture. ••'• 'Although .he has had little experience in the role,' he jumps fast. ■ . ■:■■■' Sporting Chance, who was recently operated on, is back in the active ranks, looking very well. He will not, however, be asked .to race at the local fixture. Palm and Kilorcll were sent through to the Trentham sales,- but slips, on the voad'resulted, in Palm's failing- to arrive in time, while, the. lorry containing Kiloroll reached the sal.c''ring just-as. activities were ■.over. . Consequently., neither' changed hands; ■• . A parade of yqti'iigsters will- be held between-, the races iii mid-afternooii at Awa Ipuni on Wednesday. While the ehtrisS

have not .yet. closed,: .Mrs... A. M'Donald purposes presenting seven yearlings and one two-year:old" in' the parade. _ This trainer, has . some promising material. ■While S.. Watson has been engaged in educating a rising three-year-old filly by Colossus—Projecting and a rising two-year-old by Laekham—Bon Marche, .little has been seen of the trainer at the tracks for some time past. However, as the result of C. Robinson's suspension, Evening Hero and Brown Abbey have been placed in "Watson's charge.' : '' \
