SOUTHLAND'S TEAM
CAPTAIN INJURED
Having fulfilled engagements ' with Taranaki, Wanganui, and Auckland, the Southland Rugby football team returned to Wellington to-day to mock the local representatives in a challenge match for Hie Ranf'urly Shield on Wednesday. Although beaten in two matches, the touring team has registered good performances, that against Auckland on Saturday being regarded as an excellent preliminary to the Shield match. Southland's record for the season, including a game at home, is as follows: — v. Otago, won 11-3. v. Taranaki, lost, 15-22. v. Wanganui, won, 21-8. v. Auckland, lost, 5-6. After the game with Wellington on Wednesday, the Southland team will return to the South Island, playing Canterbury at Christelmreh on Saturday. Mr. A. J. Geddes, who until this season was one of New Zealand's selectors, is manager of the touring team, the members of whieb are:—Backs: A. .M'Kay (captain), G. Porter, J. ,£l. Goddes, F. Townsend, R. Pickering, U. Crosbie, D. Grant, L. Niven, B. O'Shea, M. Ussher, and C. Johnson. Forwards: R. Donnelly, C. George, J. Mattingley, •W. Southern, G. Purdue, D. Agnew, J. Murphy, E. Fowlo, L. Naylor, J." Malcolm, and T. Metealfe (vice-captain). Sonic of the players avo suffering from injuries received on tour. The captain (M'Kay) will be unable to play on Wednesday, as lie had a collar-bone broken in the game, at Auckland on Saturday,.and there is some doubt as* to whether the vice-captain (Metcalfo) will be fit enough for- the Shield match. The team is spelling this afternoon, and will have a practice tomorrow. REFEREE SELECTED. j Mr. A.
