Basketball

BY "R/NGI"

The cold northerly wind ou Saturday did not add to the "enjoyment of the players in tho Wellington Basketball Association's competitions and affected to a large extent the accuracy of the shooting. The big match in tho senior A grade was between Wesley and University, the latter team again adding to their laurels by defeating Wesley by 13 goals to 8. From the start, University, by hotter team work and shooting, kept Wesley on tlio defensive. The Wesley forwards lacked the necessary finish to allow them to' work tho ball close enough in to the goal to make suro of scoring. Although good work by tlie Wesley centres kept tlie ball moving, University's-defence, by sure interception and speedy: passing, prevented tho forwards from ftmaking use of .their opportunities. The' half-time score was 7-2' in University's, favour. Wesley played a much better game in the second spell, and-.managed to'.scoro 6 goals. University, also Bcored 6 ; goals in this spell, and won by 13 goals,to 8. Mr. Froud refereed". ■ -.

Wellinglou East Old Girls, v. Teelmical College' Old Girls.—Tochnieal were able to keep Wellington East in check for the first part of tioVmatch,>>vhicli' was'fairly even. The half-time" score was: Wellington East : 11, Teclinical B. In the second half WellingtOJt East added -greatly : ft-to. ■ their score. Too much-■• fumMing. of; the ball spoilt combined efforts of. both teams, while Wellingt6n ; ftEast were responsible for some directed downward passes. Technicals defence put up brilliant opp6sition,: aiid several excellent interceptions prevented Wellington East from adding.to their total. The game ended: Wellington East 24, Technical 14. Mr. Froud was'referee.Kia Ora v. Y. Gym:—After a closely contested first half, when\ the score stood at 6-5 in Kia Ora's favour, the winners succeeded in improving their lead in the second spell, and ended up by winning by 12 goals, to 7. Y. Gym. continued to show improved team work, but missed the services of G. Edwards in. centre. Play generally was' of an even nature, but inability on tho part of Y. Gym. forwards to get. away from Kia Ora's defence prevented'close scoring in the second half. Mr.. Breiyw was'in chargo of the game. Brymay v. Awatcaft—Tho,. advautage of definito team tactics was'cvidonced; in this match. As, far .. as individual players'were concerned,' both teams wero fairly evenly maichedj but Bryrnay's surer, passing and anticipation enabled them to defeat Awatca.., The camo was hard fought,..neither...team gaining any great : lcad;-D.ftDawsohshot ■ accurately for tho-winners. -Mrs.'Bre-J win-refereed. ,■:'"■" : : -■.;'.-,„ > :: "- .. Gilbys v. Training College.—Although ; those teams were evenly 1 much fumbling and! resultantftporsonal contact marred play.- Scoring..was evqn throughout, the Winning '.'goal-being scored shortly before time was Called. By giving Training College such a close run, Gilbys maintained their improve-; ment of the last few weeks, and more should bo heard of this team before the season ends. Ths game ended .in Training College's favour by 13 goals to 12. Mr. Froud coutrolledfttho match. : BEPRESENTA--VE: TEAM.ft \ No senior A matches will be played on Saturday next, as most of tho games scheduled arc affected by .the absonee of players with .tho Wellington representative, team, ..which ' travelled ; to Auckland to-day.'
