Of the oceans, the Pacific is 'much the deepest, depths of over. 4500 fathoms ing found in a number of places.-. To, the Emden Deep, 40 miles to the eastward of Siargao Island, in the. Philippines, falls the honour of being the deepest spot yet sounded, the astounding depth "of 10,790 metres (practically 5900 fathoms, or -approaching seven miles) having been recorded by the German cruiser Emden in 1927." Other "deeps" in the Pacific lie near the Btmin Islands, south of Japan,' off. the Toisa Group, and close to the Kennadees. H the* Atlantic the greatest depth is. pft Porto Rico, 5228 fathoms.
