Stokes Valley 'Women's Institute members pride themselves on overcoming obstacles, or at any rate making tho.best of those that cannot be overconic," and Stokes Valley members certainly found their capabilities tried on the occasion of their July meeting. Unfortunately illness prevented the , demonstrator, Mrs. Roskruge, from showing how to make "silhouettes," and the Hay wards'members, including the hostesses, found fit impossible to cross the river owing to floods consequent on the recent heavy rains. However, substitute hostesses were soon forthcoming, in the persons of Mesdames Summers and Bramwell and Miss Joan 'Young, aud tho demonstrator's place was filled by the secretary, Mrs. s Gibson Young, who'gave a description of hor life as "A Memsahib in Burmah," illustrated with specimens of t and curios. It was decided to make a contribution towars unemployment relief from the funds. A parcel game, rounded off, in spite of drawbacks, a very pleasant afternoon. ft
Last' Friday, 3rd' July, members of women's institutes from Silverstream, Stokes Valley, Wainui-o-mata, and Palmerston North were the guests of the Pioneer Club Circle' of Women's Institutes. The president, Miss Kane, weK corned the visitors to a social afternoon. Tho-singing, circle.■ .'provided a bright and varied programme, the rendering of "Carry Mc Back'/Mieing especially enjoyed. : Greig sang charmingly. "WaitiftPoi" and . the . "Eriskay Love Lilt." Mrs. Maftyn Williams was most entertaining in two ' recitations, "Tho Art of Making Up One!s Mind" and "How Did You Die?" Mrs. Ginn was the ablo accompanist. .ftftftft. '-.ft . .
