LATE SPORTING

JUMPERS IN ACTION

OVER TRENTHAM FENCES

THIS MORNING'S WORK

After yesterday's'flooding-'at Trentham fast galloping was out of the question this morning. - So bad was the grass training track that it Was deemed unsafe to open it, ' The water that spread over the course lifted the grasstop off tho track between''the five and three furlongs, and in. that' part 'it was a quagmire in the truest sense. The sand was the only track available, and most, horses with' engagements at the meeting worked'on it at from half to thrcc-quai'tor pace.

' However, although the work was uninteresting for tho first hour or so, towards 9'o'clock the jumpers "began to appear, and then' there was move animation in proceedings. . Tuo'hurdlers went over tho three * schooling .fence's,, and the steeplechasers • over -.".five of the stoepleehase course, along -the back from the mile and round tho turn to tho three furlongs. •,.,..• : The steeplechase obstacles-embraced all except the series of brush, hurdles through the straight and on tho turn into the' back stretch. The first was the sod wall (3ft Bin high), the' heavy boarded fenco (3ft siu high), tho light boarded fence (old post-and-rail, and 3ft high), tho permanent, brush fence (3ft 9Jin high, and the tallest obstacle ou the course), and finally the other light.- boarded f once; with, canvas top (3ft. 2in high). The going on this course was excellent in spite, of tho soaking the ground had had, THE HURDLERS. The first of the hurdlers to come out was Princo Lv (F, Foster), who went over the schooling flight twice in his usual faultless stylo. ■ There is no doubt, ing this hQrso is very fit. Nassoek (B. Turner) and Mcmbo '(N, Trillo) were then: associated iii a school over the hurdles,'.also doing'tlie flight of three twice.' Both jumped.well. ISassock,, who is at the game, went at hid, fences with plenty of dash, and. ho looks.like one. who '. will mako good. Coskck Chief ' (G. Dempster) and Apache (G. .Campbell) also traversed the flight twice, each giving-a satisfactory display. Apache was.the more'cpiifii'lcnt, but Cossack Chiefs showing was' very [little inferior. . V.- •'-''■ '•"■ ftft, -■- THE'CHASERS, Spalpiko (A..M'Grc°gor).was the first to go over tho bigger fences;,- Ho went alone and fenced faultlessly,'showing a lot of pace. M' Gregor rides hbji in the Wellington Steeplechase. Red Fuchsia (A. M'Donald), Coriieroffi I (W. Blanche), and Claremorc (G, Campbell), were' the. next seen in ac'tiou. They were together most of.'the way, with Clareuioro on the'outsido, but.tho last-named ran up to lead over tho'.-last obstacle Claremore jumped'-rather big* at first, but ho mado no mistakes, and had more pace between the fences than the other pair. A. M'Donald rides both Red' Fuchsia and Corneroff in their engagements, also.Make Up, Llandudno, and Llyn Dv (final days). - ft, ...

Fabriano (D.„O'Connor), Tuki (J. ■Kerr), and West D.omo (L. Dulicu) also went over the five obstacles, Fabriano giving ono of tho best displays .of foiieing during' tho morning. : Approaching the'fourth fence (brush) Fabriano was out a length or so in. front, but he got in a little close and lost the advantage. However, he was goon iir chargo again,:and was leading at thp finish.. His jumping, except. for : the' one small error, was clean, and straight. West Dome was inclined ..to; swerve .across the boarded fences. Tuki fenced safely aud well. . • '

; Tho last of the. schooling,,bouts was provided by Lueess (F. Foster), Paris (G. Dempster), Taramoa (G. Campbell), and , Tunamoo (N. Trillo). After tho first'fcnco Tunamoo'and Paris were iii charge from Lueess and Taramoa, and that order was maintained to the finish. Tunamoo, -jumping splendidly,"'and on tho outside, just led Paris at tho final fence, with Lucoss a length or so, back, and Taramoa tailed off. ; This completed the school for, tho thrqe southerners, but Lueess was taken back and sent over the' five fences again. He' slipped at the first (sod wall) and grazed-the grass top, but he quickly recovered.- Then he got in too close to tho brush fence, and stopped to almost a walk;on; landing. The display, was hot' so good as; the first time, but it showed that he was clever in retrieving his errors. I NOTES IN GENERAL. Wako Kiug, who did not accept for the Wellington Steeplechase, was noticed out working on' the sand. He is to bo raced in the July Steeplechase on the final day. He appeared to be slightly sore in front when walking, and thisi probably accounts for Ms having been allowed to drop, oat of Saturday's, race, 'ft Among yesterday's arrivals, besides those included in tho above schooling bouts, wero Little, Doubt, Gibraltar, Royal Finance, Miss Chatter, Cooh Song, Llyn Dv, Warzohe, High Pitch, Singleton, - and ' Umtali. , Taneriri, Manawheuua, Wild Country, and Dark Prince arc due from'tho North' to-day., .""". Tho horso given' as yalrcina' iv tho Woburn Hack acceptance should be Valrewa. Additional riding engagements are: 11. Gray, -.Taneriri, Mauawhenua, Nor-, mandy, and Interlocutor (secpnd day); H. N. Wiggins, Inevitable, Wild Country, and Dick Whittiugtou (fiual days); 11. Dulieu, Auctioneer and West Dome; ,L. Dulieu; Head Seraug, Conjuror IL, and Air Laddie; A. M'Grcgor, Spalpiko; F.
