ANOTHER BIG BRIDGE
SAN FRANCISCO-OAKLAND
' It is now assured that construction of the great bridge lo connect San Francisco and Oakland, via Yeiba Bueua Island, will be put in hand at no distant date. The- State Governor has signed, the Bills of the Legislature, which provide the -money, foi; pr.elimiu- | ary work, and all that remains is to-ob--'tain from (lie United Slates War .'Department a right of way across the island. It will be a year, however, before work on the foundations or steel structure can be commenced. The cost of this groat engineering undertaking is estimated at 75,000,000 dollars, but so great are the benefits expected to be reaped that citizens are highly enthusiastic and regard the bridge as the greatest progressive improvement made in years. This bridge should not be confused with San Francisco's other great pro- ; jeet, the Bridging of the Golden Gate. The fact that two such costly undertakings for road vehicles only can be viewed by San Francisco with confidence, at the present time is wonderful testimony to America's belief in her highways as the main factor in future transport.
