SOME STAFF CHANGES

Captain W. A. E. Kershaw, commander of the liner Mataroa, which arrived at Wellington on Thursday from Southampton, has boon appointed marine superintendent for the Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company at Wellington, filling'the vacancy created by the death of Captain T. H. Chudley, E.N.B. For her Homeward voyage, the Mataroa will be commanded by the chief officer, Mr. W. G. West. Captain Kershaw, who will shortly assume his new duties, is one of the best known skippers in the trade between New Zealand and the Homeland, having been for many years with- the Shaw, Savill, and Albion Co. He was second officer on the Kia Ora when she made her maiden voyage under the late Captain Chudley in 1907, the chief officer being Captain R. S. Lewis, who is now marine superintendent for the company at Auckland. Prior td taking over the Mataroa at the end of 1926, Captain Kershaw was in command of the first Karamea and the Mahana. COMMODORE'S APPOINTMENT. Another important appointment is that of Captain W. P. Clif ton-Mogg, commodore of the Shaw, Savill, and Albion fleet, to the position of marine superintendent to Australia for the Aberdeen and Commonwealth Line, and associated interests. The Tainui, which has been under Captain Clif ton-Mogg for the past two years, left Southampton for Wellington, on Friday with Captain A. M'lntosh, formerly of the Mamari, Kia. OraV Mahia, and Karamea, as its master. ■
Captain Cliftou-Mogg-has been associated with the Shaw,' Savill, and Albion Co. since his apprenticeship days, and practically all the 33 years he has spent at sea" have been under the company,'s flag. He went to sea as an apprentice on the Westland in 1898 and tori years later was given command of the second Matatua for half a voyage. After commanding the first Karaihoa, he was called up in 1914 asa lieutenant in the Royal Naval Reserve for active service during the war. He was ■navigating officer of the auxiliary cruiser Orotava until 1917, when he took command of the transport Waimana. After the war he commanded in turn the Otira, Mahia, and Pakeha until being appointed to the Tainui in July, 1929.
