FINE SPELL COMING
BUT NOT FOR LONG
Scattered showers fell on both Saturday and Sunday, but although conditions for the most part appeared likely to improve, they became rapidly worse during Sunday afternoon and night. A depression crossed the Dominion on Sunday, and a slight cyclone developed near Cook Strait. On Sunday afternoon southerly winds became strong, and since last night rain has fallen in most districts. Boisterous conditions prevailed in the night, and there has been much snow in tho South Island. Some other oast coast towns reported snow at 9 a.m. to-day.
Auckland experienced cold, changeable weather during the week-end, with .occasional showers. Heavy rain fell during Sunday night. At Wellington it was somewhat changeable, though fair. On Sunday afternoon, however, rain fell, and it was continuous dining the night. Tho wind, which had been northwesterly, changed to southerly about 8.15 last night. ' The - total rainfall up to 9 a.m. to-day was 90 points, and at Lower Hutt it was 65 points. Christchurch had fine, sunny weather on Saturday, and a severe frost during the night. Sunday was dull and cold, and it rained in the afternoon. Since, last night there has been occasional snow showers. The rainfall was 61 points, and about one inch of snow fell. It was dull and cold at Dunedin on Saturday and yesterday. Light rain fell on Saturday night, and it snowed during Sunday night. The forecast is for strong southerly winds, still of gale force at places north of Westport and Kaikoura, but moderating gradually. The weather will be cold and showery in the North Island and in the eastern districts of the South Island, but will soon improve. Fine weather is probable in the western districts of the South Island. Many frosts are likely to-night. The coming fine spell is likely to be of brief duration.
