ADVICE NOT TO PAY LEVY
A meeting in the Queen's Theatro was addressed last night by delegates who attended the conference of unemployed workers' organisations on Saturday. The speakers were Messrs. E. G. Neal, secretary of the Wellington branch of the Unemployed Workers' Movement; L. Sim, Palmerston North, general organiser of the movement; J. Sandford, national secretary; C. M'lntyre, King Country; and AY. Murphy, Auckland. Mr. J. Turner, chairman of the Wellington branch, presided. Dealing with the unemployment situation in their districts, the speakers gavo many instances of hardship and threatened evictions. They urged a reasonable living wage on relief works, or sustenance. Refusal to pay the unemployment levy was advised. The refusal of the City Council to allow members to hold street meetings was criticised.
A vote of confidence in the national body of unemployed workers was passed.
