THE ONLY HOPE

LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL

OTHERWISE RUIN

Sydney; 28th Juno.

The topic of conversation in New South Wales is -Mr. J. T. Lang's Emergency Income Tax Bill. Almost the entire population is fervently hoping that the Legislative Council on Monday will throw out the measure at all costs. Business men predict complete ruin otherwise, and declare that money which legitimately should spread to private enterprise will bo diverted to the Government.

A "Sydney Morning Herald" editorial appeals to the Legislative Council to save the country. It is now believed that the Council will adopt this course, irrespective of the coasoquencos.

A meeting of members of the Legislative Council is being held before the reassembling of that Chamber.

It was reported to-night that a majority of the Legislative Council will defer consideration of the Wages Tax Bill until Mr. Lang discloses his intontions concerning the manner in which he will carry out the economies under the Melbourne Conference plan; as an alternative they will throw tho measure out.

Northern miners are hotly opposing the wage tax.
