CLOTHING DRIVE

PALMERSTON NORTH

EFFORT

(By Telooraph.)

(Special to "Thr Evenino Post.") ;

PALMERSTQN N.,'This Day.

Thore was a splendid response on Saturday to the appeal made to' citizens for clotl»ea for those who-are in distress. Over 3000 parcels were brought to. the Central depot in Cuba street by the large band of enthusiastic collectors who, with car and lorry, made an almost complete canvass of the city., Those in charge.of the distribution of clothes to the needy are more than gratified at the way the-public have risen to the occasion. When the earthquake refugees flocked to Palmerston North earlier in the year, distress calls were broadcast for clothes for those sufferers, and the response was wonderful. It was v feared, therefore, that when the collectors went round on Saturday they would find that cupboards (and wardrobes had already been depleted ■of spare garlnenta. While this was the case in many instances, others were; able to make up acceptable bundles. It was noticeable that many donors, sympathetic in the cause and eager to help, had either made up clothes from new material ■or had specially purchased garments for the occasion."

Mr. H. F. Wood and. hie , Wellington concert party, comprising jlesdames E. de Mauny, Woodward,. W. Andrews, Miss I. Mason, and Messrs. N. E, Aitk.cn, W. J. Mason, Leon de Mnuny, and K. Aitken. visited Palmerston North to take part in a sacred concert. at the Opera House in aid' of the Council Unemployment Fund, over £21 being taken at the door. Mr. J. A. Nash, M.P., thanked the visitors for thoir assistance, and mentioned that this was the third time Mr. Wood had brought performers from Wellington to help the cause. During the afternoon the party gave a programme for the inmates of the Old People's Home at Awapuni. The evening performance at the Opera House was equally appreciated by a large audience. ■ .
