MARIST UPSET ATHLETIC.

The': recent run of success achieved byAthletic was checked.by Marist at Newtown Park,-Athletic being.defeated by 14. points to 5.. But on performances Marist were not a nine points better team. Eight points of this margin' bf^uccess represented two-"potted" goals, the second of which, it'seemed, should nothave been allowed. However, it is not suggested that Marist Were not entitled to' a win. They were the better team in the second spell, opening up-play very nicely at times; the only thing is that the final score was somewhat flattering to-them. The.'teams were as follows:— Marist.—Cuming; Condon, M'Donald, Broderick;. Bobins, ■■? Eville; Keegan; M/Hardy;. Gill, Ottaway, .Peters, Frost, Ke'ary; 'Butler, Mouatt. ' . Athletic.—Williamson; E. Hughes, Bingham, Sullings; Scotland, Diack; Burgess; Jolly; Adam, Christensen, Watson, Boyd, F. Hughes, Gustofson, Davis. With the advantage of the wind in the first spell and particularly in view of the way they.bustled Marist in the early stages it. should* not ■ have been, beyond Athletic to jColJect points/ The Athletic pack, with every. man • toiling honestly, had: a greater share >of the ball arid. now 'and again, the way was paved for the backs to show their ; mettle. There was •overmuch, fumbling, however, and this combined with a little hesitation on the part of some of the players, spoilt several good scoring opportunities which should have been turned to good-account.' Athletic easily had the better of the spell, but they changed round without having scored and with Marist 3 points up. The Marist points were put on '-just before the interval from a good burst of combined play, via which Keegan,; Eville, and M'Donald had a hand iv turn before Bobins flashed across the line for a try. Cuming made a' poor attempt to-con-vert.

For the second spell E. and P. Hughes changed places in the Athletic team, and when later Bingham retired Ban- came on ■as full-back and .Williamson,. who had

been playing well, was moved to centre-three-quarter. Solid pressure was maintained, by Athletic for some, little time and, at last Watson scored a try, which Jolly converted. Marist opened out more than in the first spell and in the play which followed, and notably after Cuming had "potted" n splendid goal, the. backs were seen in some snappy bursts., of passing, but they found it-no easy matter to get past the dogged Athletic defence. However, when M'Donald made one of his characteristic' fast, tricky runs, he 'had Athletic badly beaten, and scored a fine try. Cuming failed to%dd the extra points. Marist 10, Athletic 5. Marist were on the attack again, when from a cross-kick ■by Condon, the ball fell into Sullings's arms, and the Athletic winger was away at top speed. It was only a fine tackle by Cuming that saved the situation for ijMarjst. He brought Sailings down a few yards from the, Marist line, and, receiving, a knock as a result of his effort, changed places with Condon. Athletic were playing with an extra man in the backs, Jolly having forsaken the wingforward position, but this change appear-ed'to-have little effect on Marist. From a clearing kick by Jolly, the ball went down to Condon. After having missed the ball and clearly.knocking it.on, Condon managed to gather it in again and "pot" a goal, to which the referee, apparently hav:ing failed to notice the definite breach that had been committed, took no exception. The goal , made the score, Marist 14, Athletic 5,, and here within a few minutes the game ' ended. ' : The referee was Mr. J. A. Wilson.
