INEFFECTIVE RAIDS
ZEEBRUGGE AND OSTEND
TRIBUTE TO JAPANESE
(.Received 26th June, 9 a.m.)
LONDON, 25th June,
The "Official History of Naval Operations" reveals that the Ostend-Zeebrugge raids were not nearly as .successful as was believed at the time. Of 115 shells fired at Ostend, only sixteen landed near the targets, inflicting damage easily repairable. The belief that the Z'eebrugge raid effectively bottled up the Germans is quite erroneous, for within a few days Ul6 went to sea past the blockships. . The "Official History" pays a tribute to the Japanese and their destroyers in the Mediterranean. They spent.73 per cent, of their time at sea, compared with the British 60 per cent., and the French and Italian 45 per cent. •
