HELP FOR THE NEEDY

LOWER HUTT SYSTEM

UNEMPLOYED CO-OPERATE

Tho organisation for the relief of distress at Lower Hutt is now in operation. The cei'-tral depot in High street j was very busy this morning in dealing with applicants in need for clothing, the applicants overflowing on to the footpath. Mr. F. J. Jones, tho secretary, has established an office at tho depot. Mootings of most of the sub-committees have been held. A meeting of the unemployed to tho number of about 120 was held yesterday and was addressed by Mr. Barton Ginger (convener of the fuel committee), Mr. B. Cooper (convener of tho industrial committee), Mr. W. Nash (convenor of the financial committee), and Mr. Jones, the secretary, who explained how the unemployed could assist tho committees. The following motion was carried unanimously: "That this meeting, after hearing tho members of the central executive for the relief of distress in the borough, thanks them for the work that they had done, and pledges all the unemployed in the borough to givo full co-operation for tho successful working of the various schemes." A 4 meeting of the provisions committee, presided over by Mr. A. W. Ncsbit, was held last evening, and several schemes for obtaining and distributing provisions were considered. It was resolved to appeal to the public for gifts of non-perishable goods, such as jam, preserves, fruit, groceries, and vegetables, to be left, if possible, at tho central depot. If this is not possible, they aro requested to telephone Mr. Nesbit (48, local, and 46-305). Residents are also requested to give orders on their tradesmen for such perishable goods as milk and moat. Owners of cars arc requested to notify Mr. Nesbit of their willingness to place their cars at the disposal of the committee for not more than two hours a fortnight. The committee will also get into touch with tradesmen of the borough to arrange for their customers to leave with them orders for the delivery of perishable goods to needy cases.
