BRITISH EMIGRANTS
Emigration from Great Britain fell very heavily during last Jrear, while tho number of British subjects returning from abroad increased, according to figures given in the current "Board of Trade Journal." The net excess of emigrants was only 25,055, as against 5T,469 in 1929, says the "Manchester Guardian." The number of British subjects emigrating wtis as follows:— 1028 ..... •... 136,834. 192!.) 143,65G lf)30 02,158 The decrease is mainly accounted for by a big reduction in the number going to' Canada, where unemployment has now assumed serious proportions. Australia, too, is taking fewer Britishcvs—dyer 40,000 in 1927, only 8517 last year. More people left Australia for JBrittii.iv than Britain for Australia. Assisted emigrations Tinder Ihe Empire Settlement Act totalled 12,005, against 34,476 in the previous year. In addition to these, the Overseas Settlement Department helped 17,252 persons to go .to Canada. The number of women emigrating slightly -exceeded that •>' men. >
