Although they did not. intend making the pace, the twelve Hult Valley harriers ■who ran in relays from Petone to Mas-| terton yesterday covered the distance in eseeptionally good time. Each man was keen to do his lap in his best time, and the weather could not liavo been finer, ■with the result that the distance of 58 miles was covered in shrs 40niin, the finishing man reaching the Masterton Post Office, at an easy pace, at 1.40 p.m., more than an hour before the expected time ot arrival. , • A baton, which was earned by caen runner in turn, contained the following message from the Mayor of Petone (Mr. D. M'Kenzic) to the" Mayor of Masterton (Mr. T. Jordan):— "The Hutt Valley Harrier and Amateur Athletic Club, a very fine body of young men, of whom our town is justly proud, is taking part in a relay race from Petone to Masterton on the King's Birthday. Ifc is the general opinion of its members that it would be a graceful act if greetings were to be conveyed by the relay runners from the citizens of Petone to yourself, aa' representative of the citizens of Masterton. This, I understand, is the first attempt at such a run by any North Island harrier club, .and it has given me great pleasure to accede to the request of the young men to be allowed to be the bearers of a letter conveying the greetings and good wishes of the one borough to the other. These greetings and good wishes I now officially extend to yon, and you will have this letter handed j to you by one of the relay runners who J so worthily -Uphold' the prestige of Petone in athletic circles. With my personal good wishes for the success and prosperity of I the borough over which you preside, and a successful tevnv of office to you."

The team, on its arrival at-Masterton, was; welcomed' by the Mayor, Mr. T. -Jordan,' and; entertained.at-afternoon tea. Mr. A. Hadley,'president..of the Hutt Valley Harrier Club, presented Mr. Jordan with a baton containing a, scroll bearing the names of members of the team, and read a message of congratulation from Mr. L. Patterson, 32min 47sec. F. Sauders's time for the 3 W0 mile run up the Kimutaka Hill was 21min 35sec.
