NEW FERRY STEAMER
WHARF BEING LENGTHENED
On account of the size of the Union Company's 'new ferry. steamer Kangatira the Harbour Board has decided to extend the length of the Lyttelton Ferry Wharf by 40 feet. The preliminary work of preparing the piles is already in hand, and the actual work on the wharf will start very shortly. The waiting shed on the wharf will be extended by 20 feet. The extension on the wharf will have its corners more rounded than they are at present. Eounded corners on wharves are very popular with captains, as they allow ■of easier manoeuvring when coming in to the berth, and in case of a collision the chance of damage is much smaller. The extension .to the wharf is expected to be finished within four months at the latest, and will be ready for the Rangatira when she arrives from England.
