1 BUT IMPROVING SOON

The vapid rise in'barometers owing to tho approach of an intense anticyclone from' the Tasman Sea has been responsible for strong southerly winds, which in places have reached galo force. The change to southerlies on the' East Coast botwoen Akaroa and East Cape was delayed yesterday until tho afternoon or ovening. Whilst remaining fine in that locality yesterday, the, weather in other places was cold, squally, and showery. Sinco last^night, however, wintry conditions^'h'ave become general, and in places there have been heavy hail showers. At 9 a.m. to-day the southorly wind was moderating in the South Island, but over the North Island it was still strong. Twonty-threo points of rain were recorded. In Dunedin it was unsettled and showory all day, the wind being a strong southerly. Moderate to strong southerly winds north of Wcstport arid Kaikoura will gradually decrease in strength, according to to-day's forecast. Elsewhero northerly winds will prevail, and northorlios will soon extend as far north as Cook Strait and freshen. Showers nro still' liUoly on tho East Coast from Kaikoura northward, but tho' weather should soon improve.
