SYNOPSIS OF LAST 24 HOURS.
The rapid eastward movement of the recent depression and the equally rapid approach of an intense anti-cyclone have ibeen responsible for strong southerly winds to gales over the Dominion. The weather was fine yesterday morning on Iho East Coast between Banks Peninsula and Kast Cape, where tho southerly had not then set in, but elsewhere cold, squally, and showery conditions prevailed. During tho afternoon and night, however, rain extended to eastern districts and at places heavy hail showers have since occurred. At 9 a.m. to-day strong southerlies were still "blowing over the North Island, but they were much less strong in tho South Island, and in , Westland the weather was fine.
