DIVIDEND PAID TWICE!

The New Zealand punter might never recover from the shock if the totahsator here weie to pay out twice on the result of a racp. But m Ii eland such a precedent has been established, for at tho Phoenix Park Meeting on 4th April a double dividend was paid on the AshUmn T\vo-> earold Plate. After a bumping finish Irish Guard defeated Happy Tag by a head. Irish Guard was disqualified, but before his disqualification had been announced a win dividend was posted, and his backers were paid. When his disqualification was made known' a win dividend was declared for Happy Tag, who was awarded.the race. The question whether the Phoenix Park Race Club or one of its officials, or the Board of Control shall bear the loss for ••tproew over Irish Guard lemains-to be flecked. The official statement subsequently, issued to tht Press was as follows:—"After the stewtatls had disqualified Irish Guard, •who came in first for'the' Ashtown1 PJate,

on the objection lodged with thp clerk of the course within iho stipulated time, 1 they ascertained that the clei k of the I'oinsp hiid not notified Hip flcik of thp stales of tho objection, and that thp clerk oi the scales had issued the necessary ccrlificate to the totabsator, -which paid on thp horses as placed by tho judge.
