NON-PARTY CONFERENCE

CANBERRA, 18th May.

The Prime Minister's suggestion for an informal conference of all parties is not, likely to bo adopted. According to well-informed opinion in Canberra and Melbourne, the Oppoj sition members will insist as a condition that Mr. E. G. Theodore, Fedcial Treasurer, shall resign from the Ministry and that tho Government shall abandon finally the fiduciary issue.

A full meeting of tho United Party is being held on Wednesday, when it is hoped that a decision , will ,be reached.

The Prime Minister, Mr. J. H. Scullin, in the House of Representatives on Friday, earnestly invited the Opposition to join the Government in a frank discussion on economic and financial problems, not as members of this'or that party, but as responsible representatives of the people, anxious to find a solution of the grave ■ unemployment and human distress, as well as helping tho man on the land, lie was prepared, he said, to devote the whole of the following week, and would suspend the Standing Orders of Parliament for such a conference.
