POST OFFICE REPORTS
Messages received by the Secretary of the G.P.O. state that the 'q oakes as felt at Gisborne was preceded by rumbling noises -from tho sout \i, and that it had a sharp upward thrust. Numerous windows in business pr eraises were thrown out. In contra-duitine-tion to tho big 'quake, the damage appears to be more general in the lousiness area than in the suburbs. The electric light failed. Inquiries indicate that the centre of tho inland • disturbance was in the vicinity of "Win irerata hills. The 'quake was felt ni oderately at Tokomaru Bay, but not' at intermediate towns between there iand To Araroa. Opotiki reports that the 'quake was severe, but there was no damage. Examination of the Ckdef Post Office building by tho Public Works Department reveals one single chimney thrown out of plumb, a aid not considered safe.
