CAPTURED IN CHINA
STATEMENT BY HENDERSON

Replying to a question in the H f.so of Commons, Mr. Henderson said that during the last two years fifteen British sub.fets had been captured hi China, all of whom escaped or were released. Eight others had bgcn murdered, and one, iia;iely Father Tiernoy, died in captivity. The National Government realised their responsibility for ensuring tho adequate protection of British subjects aiitl discharged it as far as they could. Most of tho outrages occurred in remote places, where tho Government., though they had jurisdiction, did not exercise effective control.
