PARACHUTIST KILLED
FAl'i. OF 5400 FEET
FRANTIC FIGHT TO SAVE
HIMSELF
(By; Telegraph.—Press Association.) OAMARU, 3rd May. In the full view of 1400 horrified spectators, the Norwegian parachutist, Haa'k-ou Qvillcr, aged 35, crashed to dealth from an aeroplane piloted by Cajjtain White, at an altitude of 5400 feftt, yesterday afternoon, during a demonstration in aid of tho formation of t?j,o local Aero Club. The machine rose from a" paddock near the racecourse, and circled five 'times to gain altitude. Qviller jumped clear of the machine, and when the parachute failed to open immediately the crowd thought it was part of the demonstration. Until ho was within--200 feet of tho ground, Qvillcr fought frantically to open the parachute, and then he appeared to lose consciousness. The impact was so terrific that the body was literally smashed to pieces. Captain White is of tho opinion that tho swinging of the body drew the cords together and tightened them. Qviller's last words on leaving the aeroplane were: "I think this one will be all right." Tho deceased was a native of Oslo, ; Norway, and has no relatives in New Zealand.
