TRADE UNION FUNDS

(To the Editor.) Sir,—The secretary of tho Wellington ! Waterside Workers' Union states that it is not true that -members of that linion are barred from work unless their contributions are first -paid. If our information on this point was incorrect, we have no hesitation in saying that we do not wish to do any injustice to the union, or to make any assertions which are untrue. The secretary's letter implies that members of this union are at no disadvantage in getting work,1 even though their contributions are in arrears; this is to 'the credit of the union, because we know of at least one large union which bars its uufinancial members. The secretary also says that our statement that there is no provision for any benefit to members is untrue. We have again referred to the balance-sheet which we originally criticised and can only repeat what we said, namely, that it shows "no provision for any benefit or assistance to members in case of sickness." The only sums which are recorded outside the general casts of management are £5 as donation for the • "Home for Aged and Needy" and £3 3s "Hospital Comforts Fund." Therefore if any. benefits for sickness, etc., do accrue to tha members these do not appear on the balance-sheet. —. We are, etc., N.Z. WELFARE LEAGUE. 4th May.
