A FAST MILE
INDOOR TRACK MEETING
While in New York, Mr. H. Austad, | chairman of the Council of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association, who recently returned to Wellington after an absence of nine months abroad, saw a fine mile contest at an indoor track meeting in New York. It was at the Knights of Columbus track games. Leo Lermond, who was iv New Zealand the season before last, was just beaten for first place by Gene Venzke, of the Swedish-American Athletic Club, in tain U 2-ssec. Ray Conger, o£ the Illinois Athletic Club, was third ,and George Bullwinkle wae fourth.Bullwinkle was mentioned "by the N.Z.A.A.A.'s American represemtative in the negotiations for the. visit, of the last American team to New ZealamL At the same meeting I?.' Sturdy (Los Angeles) won the pole vault at 13ft 9m. Anton Burg (Illinois Club), national champion, won the high jump in a jumpoft' with H. Spencer, Negro, student of Geneva College, who has. the; quamt sartorial habit of jumping with, one shoe oft". They tied, at -6ft-.sV4in, but (Spencer, faiied to clear'6ft 4&in. after both had knocked off the bar. at 6ft OVim. Another, 'fine performance -was that of S. Martin !(Boston), who won the half-mile invitation run in 'Imin 58sec. . '. V. ■ > ,; . '■ Mr Austad said he; was convinced that New Zealand had, some of the .finest ath : letes in the world. With the same.tracks, and facilities that existed in America, .he was certain the Dominion would turn out runners, 'particularly middle-distance runners, who would be in the first flight.
