A SECOND OTAIRI?
CASHIER AS HURDLER
Cashier signalled his debut' into the fencing ranks trith a very decisive win in the Hack Hurdles at Ma'rton, and if the ease with Avliich he settled thp opposition can be.taken as a criterion it may not be long before he has to' ; be, classed on a ■plane, with his versatile full, brother, Otairi. He was one of. the first to move, had charge passing the stands, aiid drew ■further and further away as the race progressed,"-'finally romping home eight ■lengths ahead-of Tunliridge, with Easterly coming- fast into -third-place,'another two lengths back. His jumping was somewhat extravagant, for he got in close. to many of his fences and then had to leap high; but he made no niistake, in clearance, and much; improvement can be expected as a result of the experience"he gained. Still, one .will wait to see him ■successfully tack-, ling, harder', fences than those at Marton . before marking him down as a champion in the making. : Tunbridge, outsider but one in the field, rtn'a good race for second money, but the third horse, Easterly, is one who will probably beat him: next time they meet. Easterly-had, only, .Callamar-tr. and Kopje behind,, her- after, half a mile had been traversed, but she came very fast over the last'part of the trip and will be much improved with the race. Best of . the beaten horses were probably Warzone, Goldlike, and Star Girl, who finished next after the placed horses. • Warzone was second into the straight, but ..weakened 'in the run home. • Goldlike, who was a hot favourite, gave trouble at. the start, and badly interfered with Kopje and Callamart when the field "was 'dispatched. However, lie. quickly .recovered, the ground he lost, and held, a forward, place the rest .of" the. way. Star Girl, a.member of L. JKnapp's team, was quietly fancied in some 'quarters;- and impreesetl'-'as' one; who will shortly" be doing better'!-'.The-easy fences were^against the chance of Birkbeck, who -isa 1 jumper out and: out. His eighth at the finish should not dishearten those who formed their opinion .of him at Trentham.
