AIM AT ECONOMY

HOSPITAL ESTIMATES

LIMIT SET TOO LOW

(By Telegraph.) I (Special to "The Evening Post") AUCKLAND, 27th April. .. -.Although a reduction of nearly £48,----000 has been made in the estimated maintenance expenditure of the Auckland Hospital Board compared with that of last year, the estimate is £22,000 in excess of the limit of £162,- j 571 originally imposed by the Health Department. Although every source of economy has been taken into consideration, it has been found impossible to keep the estimates within the amount prescribed by the Department. It was doubtful whether the estimates adopted would prove acceptable, either to the Minister or the Department, and it was fully expected that they would be returned for further consideration.

A reduction of more than £27,000 has been made in the estimate for hospital maintenance alone. Only £45,000 has been allowed for outdoor relief, whereas £60,000 was spent under that heading last year. A reduction of £2000 has been made in the estimate for maintenance of the infirmary, which means that patients will have to be refused admission there.
