CIVIC AFFAIRS

MISS KANE AT HATAITAI

Women liavo their contribution to make to the work of the City Council sis well as to other public bodies, said Miss Amy Kane, a candidate for that body nt a meeting of ladies at Hatuitai yesterday afternoon. There were many wiiys, slio procot.'floil, in avlmc.li money was aiionti too lavishly, when times were

good, and women could detect ways of saving money more quickly than men, being well accustomed _to milking economics. Such savings in all departments would amount to quite considerable' sums and assist to that reduction in rates which all candidates standing for election under tho Civic League nomination were anxious to effect. During the coming year it was not likely that any large works would be undertaken, but the improvement of footpaths was one in which tho women were particularly interested, and it -would receive her attention. Speaking at Roseneath at a subsequent meeting when the question of the site of the present destructor was touched upon, Miss Kane said the subject was fraught with difficulties, but some action should certainly be taken to prevent the present nuisance. A suggestion that more use should be made of tho power was brought 'forward and that it might be utilised for hot baths for those unable to obtain them. Mrs. E. J. Moore, candidate for the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, also spoke, saying that, if elected, she would endeavour to ascertain where economies could be effected, after the care of the patients and nurses in tho institution had been safeguarded. A .vote of thanks and confidence in the speakers was passed at both meetings, all present promising to work for the return of the two candidates.
