BRITISH PREFERENCE
A correspondent, "Let the Government Give First Lead," draws attention to'a recent announcement that after 17th May the motor spirit used by all Government Departments in the North Island would be a certain brand. "The same Government (writes the correspondent) preaches (bnt does not practise) the doctrine of British preference by giving American products its patronage, while equally good i£ not better spirit produced by British companies and financed by British capital is available on the market. Again tires of well-known British makes are generally conceded to be at least as good as the best. Yet American tires are to be seen oil by far the great majority of Government vehicles. Again why? Why does our Government aiot give the lead in purchasing the British article and trading with the country, that buys our products and lends us our money instead of upholding this doctrine. ../Do not as I do, but do as I tell you to do.'"
