GEOFFREY
The name Geoffrey has the fine meaning of "God's Peace" or "The Peace . of God." It comes from the Teutonic "Geofroi." 'Trey," and "froi" and "i'roicl," in a name always mean "Teaee." Geoffrey may be- spelled Jeffrey, and when an."s" is added both forms become familiar surnames. Sometimes the name is found as Jaffrey or .Inffre, or, like the French general's name, Jofire. Godfrey is another variant, and it is used both for Christian .and surname. Jf, was borne by the famous Crusader Godfrey do Bouillon, Lord of Loraine, the conqueror of Jerusalem (1096). Another bearer ivaa Geoffrey de Mantleville. Earl of Esses (1144), whose, tomb may be seen in the Temple Church, London.
