TROTTING

AT ADDINGTON

METROPOLITAN MEETING ENDS

(By Telegraph*) (Special to "The Evening Post.") CHPJSTCHURCH, Bth April. The New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club's Meeting was concluded in very pleasant, conditions until just before the seventh race, when drizzling rain set in. The track was in great, order, and some fast times were registered, the three-year-olds Arethusa and Kcd Shadow putling up outstanding performances. The attendance was good and the totalispared with , £41,952 on the same day last pared with £41,952 on the same clay lats year. The total for tile meeting was JE61.92U 10s, against £91,024105. Standby, who was costly on the first clay, when he failed to go off,, made amends in tliG- Harvest Handicap. ■ Donald got him away smartly, and after taking the lead at the end of two furlongs he was not headed again. It was a fine race, however. Nelson Boy and Admiral Bin?cn -were just behind the leader at the end of half a mile, but Staudby stayed a little too well. Nelson Boy was shut in all the way, and may have been unlucky. Standby is a good, prospect for fast company. Stanley T. broke early. The race was run at a hot pace, the time registered by Admiral Bingen being a record for a trotter. The Oxford Handicap was an exciting mile saddle event. Cranleigh began smartly, and was followed by Mac Dillon, Zenith, Avonwood, Nelson d'Oro, and Dilnon after'going two furlongs. Cranleigh appeared to have the race in safe keeping -when he held a lead of tliree lengths fifty yards from the winning post, but he stopped badly, Nelson d'Oro beating him by a neck. Dilnon was a neck away, with Mac Dillon and Krina close up. . Krina was unlucky. Eoyal Comrade failed to go off at the start. Nelson d'Oro finished strongly,. but .though speedy he is not a good stayer. BRILLIANT RUN BY FREE ADVICE. Free Advice followed up her success on the opening day by accounting for the President's Handicap by a narrow margin. Pluto, Vesuvius, Harold Thorpe, Regal Voyage, and Travis Axworthy were soon in close order in front.' Regal Voyage and Harold Thorpe drew away three furlongs from home, and Regal Voyage was out clear in the straight, but Free Advice wore her down with a brilliant run. Phito and Harold Thorpe were nest. Travis Axworthy faded out badly in the last two furlongs. His was a disappointing performance, especially as the pace was not fast In the first mile. Free Advice has raced very consistently for some time. Regal Voyage paced a sound race, but probably is not quite at her best after a spell. The Halswell Handicap provided a fine contest. Milo Mihto was soon in charge, with Red Shadow, Great Author, Colonial Boy, Hostess, and Delightful all handy. There was no great change till three furlongs . from home, when Red Shadow shot to. the front and won decisively. Milo Minto ■ followed him to the straight, but Delightful stayed on in great style to cut Milo Miuto out of second money. Great Author, Jolly Pet, and Avenger were close up. Red Shadow registered an exceptional performance, his time, 4min 27sec, being a record for a thi'eo-year-old, and .he. stayed the journey like a good horse. ARISTOTLE IS GOOD. • The Welcome Handicap, for three-year-olds, found Homeward trying to win from end to end. Oro's Pride, Aristotle, Herod, Priceless, and Location were in close attendance, however, during most of the journey. Aristotle tackled Homeward in the straight, and was driven out to win by> a 'nose.- Priceless and Location were only "a ' length a Way. Location was the unlucky Tiorse of this quartet. Herod met trouble near the finish,, when going well. Aristotle, a half-brother to Avenger, looks like making a good horse.' Homeward is a smart filly by Happy Voyage, and she will improve. In this race the club used large numbers on the. horses, showing on each side, the same as used by the Wellington .Trpt.ting .Club, and the innovation came in for much .favourable comment. Teremoa set- a hot pace in the early part of the April Handicap, being in front early, followed by Major Lind, while St. George took third place half a mile from home. Teremoa was in trouble a furlong further oh. St. George joined Major Lind at the home turn, and drew out to win comfortably. Arethusa came from a long way back in the last half-mile, and beat Major Lind for second place by two lengths. Arethusa registered 4min 24 sec, a three-year-old record, which qualified her for the.New Zealand Cup. It was a great effort by the Ashburton filly. A mix-up six furlongs from home settled the chances of Mister Pointer and several others. Master Audo M-as in front from start to finish in the Sunnier Handicap. Bonny Spec was close behind him at the end of half a mile. Master Audo broke twice in tha. straight, but scrambled home by a head. Native Star was four lengths away. She went very fast in patches, but a bad break settled her chance. Surprise Journey was not sighted till the last halfmile, when she put in a great run to finish fourth. Master Audo's final break was made a few strides from the post, and his driver let him battle on. It would have caused no surprise if some action had been taken. , The concluding event, the High Class Handicap, drew a fine field. Great Logan set a Htrong pace, with Harold Thorpe, Dundas Boy, Vesuvius, Harold Logan, and Travis Axworthy handy. Half a mile from home Great Logan drew away with Harold Logan, and Eoi lOr in hot pursuit. Harold Logan led to the straight, but Rbi lOr wore him down, while Free Advice came -with, a late run to get third, Great Logan being next. Travis Axworthy, as in his earlier race, stopped badly. Roi lOr registered a brilliant performance. Results in detail:— Harvest Handicap, of 350 soys; 3.33 class.
