"THE NARK'

(To the Editor.)

gir,—l see one would-be councillor lias declared that he is going to be "the nark" if he gets in. "The nark," in my opinion, i 3 the man who stops progress, breeds discontent among employees, and wastes the^time of the council. As an old resident of Wellington, I would like to congratulate Mr. Troup and the council on the solid progress made during their term of office, the many big works undertaken and completed, and paving the way for other big works, the beautiful clean streets, the reserves and flowering plantations everywhere. lam about a lot and See all these things. As to the lack of co-ordination and the digging up of streets after being paved, in most cases this cannot be helped, but after all the cost goes in wages to the worker, and eventually finds its way to the butcher, baker, grocer, etc. However, the Mayor and' councillors are the servants of the people", and if they are not conducting the affairs of the city m a proper manner, the remedy is to turn them out at election * time,- but • when we elect them, let us give all the help we can, instead of for everlasting finding fault. In Thursday's '"Post" Mr. Troup gave us a review of the trading concerns of the city, and the electricity department showed a profit of £50,000 for the year. What a gold mine this would have been for the private company Had the council not bought it out. Also, would current be as cheap, as' it is to-day? As to the rates, I think the price is cheap for all the advantages I get. If people will live in the city they must pay. Personally, when I finish business I like to be out of it. However, some of the dissatisfied ratepayers want to go to other cities and find out how well off they are here.—l am, etc., WELLINGTONIAN.
