RELAY RACE

DUNEDIN TO TIMARU

At Easter a team of runners from the Dunedin Civil Service Harrier Club will hold a relay run to Timaru, carrying a message from the Mayor of Dunedin to the Mayor of the South Canterbury town. Although this form of running is fairly common in Victoria, this will be the first attempt of its kind in New Zealand, and considerable interest is being taken in the pioneer venture, says a Dunedin writer. The team will consist of ten runners, the first of whom will leave the Town Hall, Dunedin, at 9 o'clock sharp on Good Friday morning. Each of the ten rnnners will coyer a little over seven miles on the first day. It is expected that the Oamaru Post Office will be reached between 4.30 and 5 o'clock on the Friday afternoon. The first runner will leave Oamaru at 9.30 on the Saturday morning, aud Timaru should be reached somewhere about 3 o'clock on the Saturday afternoon. The Mayor of Timaru will bo at the viaduct at Caroline Bay to receive the message which will be carried throughout by the runners. A bus will follow the runners throughout the trip, and a check will be kept of each man's time. Although the runners will not bo racing against anyone, it is confidently expected that a time record o£ between 13 and 14 hours will be established.
