GOVERNMENT'S ACTION

The Minister of Transport and Public Works (the Hon. W. B. Taverner) announced to-day that it has been decided not to allow persons to- proceed to Napier and Hastings in the meantime to seek employment. No permits will be issued to persons to proceed ■byroad vehicles unless authentic evidence is produced to the Transport Department that their services have been sought, and even then to obtain access to Napier or Hastings it is likely that their entry into those towns will require to be- approved by the authorities in control of them. Applications on other grounds will still be subject to the closest scrutiny, and motor vehicles will definitely not be allowed beyond Dannevirke without permits, which may be applied form Wellington at the Transport Department during office hours, and after office hours Telephone 37-869. In other centres application should be made to the local police office. The whole position with regard to employment in the area, is being, closely watched, and a further announcement will be made calling for applications, should the necessity arise. Persons, other than residents, proceeding to Napier and Hastings are warned that, according to recent messages, the food in those towns is being rationed, and will be obtainable only by residents.
