A correspondent writes:—Lowell's vision of Sir Launfal applies to the present earthquake position: : ; When the beggar asked for assistance of the man who only possessed a mouldy crust of bread and a cup of water, as he was offered half of the crust and the water, the mouldy crust turned into new bread and the water to blood red wine, and as the giver lifted his mouldy share, tho beggar turned into Christ. ■ ' '"Not what we give But; what we shave, Fov the gift without the giy*' Is bare. Who gives himself with his gift Feeds three— Himself, his hungry neighbour, And me." ' ;
