MAGISTRATE'S COURT
Mr. E. Page, S.M., presided over a sitting of the Magistrate's Court yesterday. Charged with the theft of articles of clothing of a total value of £2, the property of Norman Smith, Lester Charles Sheppard, fireman, aged 21, was convicted and admitted to probation for a period of twelve months. An order was made for the stolen property to be returned to the owner. Stuart Tumbull Spencer, labourer, aged 24, and Victor Banner, clerk, aged 21, were each convicted and fined £2, in default seven days' imprisonment, on a charge of stowing away oh the Karepo at Newcastle. A remand until 18th February was pvantcd in the case of John Francis Burns, cabinetmaker, who was charged witli obtaining £10 from William Earl Varkcs by falsely representing that lie had been established as a deen-sea fisherman at Makara for the past three years, that the returns were,/ never less than £100 a week, that he owned two launches, aud that for £150 he would sell Parkes a half-share in the business. Bail was allowed in the sum of £50 and one surety of £50.
