TO TOUR ENGLAND
GOOD BATTING SIDE
STRENGTH DISCUSSED
. (By Telegraph, from "Not Out.") AUCKLAND, This Day. The candidature for places in tho New-Zealand cricket team for England ended with the finish of the AucklandWellington Plunket Shield match yesterday, and it did not take the selectors long to reach a final decision. It was intended to make the- selection to-day, but with the sudden termination of tho final trial the selectors —Messrs. W. S. Bric.e (Wellington), N. C. Snedden (Auckland), H. B. Whitta (Canterbury), and F. Williams (Otago) —met right away. As was indicated in "The Post" yesterday, they were agreed upon the players to fill most of the places, and all that remained for them to do was to pass a final judgment upon those of the remaining candidates who were likely to be most serviceable as bowlers... It, did1 not look aa easy task, ..but'it was quickly settled. While the announcement of the team gave rise "to* no little surprise among some enthusiasts who were well acquainted with the players offering for the tour and who were well alive to the needs of a team going to the home of cricket, it was received with satisfaction by others as a team capable of acquitting itself well on the big tour Thoso of the latter feeling included Mr. A. T. Donnelly, chairman of the New Zealand Cricket Council, who had delayed his departure from Auckland jusf, long enough to receive the selectors' verdict, which set out that the following fourteen players had been selected for the tour:— J. E. MEDIiS (Auckland) C S. DEMPSTER (Wellington) J. L. KERR (Canterbury) d, L. WEIR (Auckland) R. C. BLUNT (Otago) H. G. VIVIAN (Auckland) T C. I.OWRY (Rangitikei) C P. W. ALLCOTT (Auckland) I B. CROMB (Canterbury) M. L. PAGE (Canterbury) K. C JAMES (Wellington) R O. TALBOT (Canterbury) A M. MATHESON (Auckland) W. E: MERRITT (Canterbury) It was stated by the chairman of the council that a meeting of the would.be held in the course of a few days -to appoint the captain vieecaptain, and manager.. The last-named position! is likely to be, filled by Mr Donnelly, if he agrees to accept, _but there is still a possibility, now that Alleott is in the team, of a player-.' manager, with the council chairman undertaking other duties in an official dUThT team is to leave Wellington by theßangitata on 28th March for England. .
