GIRL ADMITTED TO PROBATION

Ethel Mather, a domestic servant, aged 22, was sentenced to two years' probation by Mr. E. Page, S.M., at the Magistrate's Court to-day for stealing a ring valued at £10, the property of Muriel James. * Sub-Inspector Lopdell said that the accused had been in domestic service at Titahi Bay, where, she had become acquainted with Miss James. <On 14th January Miss James went to town, and during her absence the accused entered a tent occupied by Miss James and stole the ring, afterwards pawning it in Wellington. On the recommendation of the women's probation officer, the Magistrate sentenced the accused to a term of probation and ordered her to make restitution at a rate to be fixed by the probation* officer.
