CITY MAYORALTY

(To the Editor.)

Sir, —At an early date ratepayers will be invited to elect a candidate for the City Mayoralty, and I venture through your columns to suggest a gentleman whoi if he consented to nomination, would undoubtedly receive very general support. I refer to Mr. T. C. A. Hislop, a Wellington born resident and at preseut a member of 'the City Council. Records show that he ivas first elected to the council in 1913, resigning on the outbreak of war for service abroad, and returned to the Dominion five years iater. When he again offered his services for the council, in 1927 Mr. Hislop was re-elected at the top of the poll, occupying the same position two years later, polling over 12,000 votes, facts to warrant the opinion that his prospects of success for the Mayoralty would be second to none! He has filled the position of chairman; is a member of various council sub-committees, and is therefore conversant with the city affairs and requirements. Besides, if Mr. Hislop could be prevailed upon to contest the Mayoralty, it would be a fitting tribute to his late father, the Hon. T. W. Hislop, who filled the Mayoral chair for four terms, 1905-1908, with considerable success.—l am, etc., , KATEPAYER. 24th January. (To the Editor.) Sir, —I notice in your paper of the 23rd that Mr. R. A. Wright, M.P.^has definitely stated that he will not contest the Mayoralty at the forthcoming election, on ucco'unt of the heavy' Parliamentary session ahead. I take it that he means he could not do both successfully, and intends to keep on with the most import ant. I feel sure in this action Mr. Wright, will have the endorsement of the electors.I am confident that the majority of our community will agree that our members of Parliament have enough problems to solve in the House, and quite enough to do with the country's finance and unemployment without dabbling, in council 'matters. , , ' ' If the members who pveach One .man one job" took the same road as Mr. Wright, we could find plenty of reliable citizens who would manage our council affairs just as successfully as they, and then- our M.P.'s could devote more time to the country as a whole, I may add this also applies to many other organisations, etc., such as the Unemployment Board. —I am, \.etc., ' . \ V UNEMPLOYED.
