CYCLING CONTROL

SPLIT IN N.Z.U<C. RANKS,

"BUNGLE FROM THE START"

There are indications, according -tft recent events, of a big split in .the ranks of the New Zealand- Union, *>£ Cyclists, .which, has sought, to .obtain control of amateur cycling in New Zealand, and of a desire by ■ cyclists who; joined up with this organisation toi come back under the control of the New, Zealand Amateur Athletic Association, J. A. Foole andL. Roberts, the'leading riders of the Port Nicholson 'Amateur. Road Cycling Club (Inc.), which linked up with the so-called break-away movement, hays applied to ride again under the auspices of the N.Z.A.A.A., and the; late treasurer of the club, Mr. W. Sutherland, is another who has made applij cation to have the suspension, -which wa» automatically imposed upon all riders and officials who went over "to the N.Z.U.C., lifted. . ; ,;......''. ;.• It is also repotted from Auckland that there is a possibility of members of the Manukau Club, Auckland, making a similar move to Foote and Roberts. In a letter, to Mr.' G.. S. Bright, of the council of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association, a member oi the Manukau Club stated that he believed the Manukau riders would willingly return 'to the N.Z.A.A.A., but at present were awaiting the result of .the. February conference of the Union: Cyeliste Internationale in France,.which he sincerely hoped gave, licence ..to the N.Z.A.A.A. to control all amateur cycling in the interests of the U.C.I, . .The Whole affair on the N.Z.U.C.'s. part, .the correspondent stated, was a bungle from the start. He said that a number of the members of the Manukau Club were talking, not idly, of .turning professional, which he would not lUce them to do. Withont the Manukau Club .the N.Z.U.C. would have no foundation. Before Christmas the New Zealand Union of Cyclists claimed that' it had been given control by the U.C.I, of cycling in New Zealand, but in a statement issued on Christmas Eve, Mr. R. W. M'Villy,. president of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association, said that his association had correspondence in its possession which showed clearly that tho whole question of control was still sub judice. •-It was contended by Mr. M'Viily that the position had been misrepresented overseas, and that cable advice had been.received from England that the temporary affiliation granted' to the N.Z.U.C. regarding amateur cycling in the Dominion would be "reviewedat the February conference of the Union Cycliste Internationale and the wiK>l« matter reopened. ■
