Brodio. .(Arikira), and W; Broughtoa (Autopay). GOVERNMENT TAXES. The taxation collected from the club by the Government, in" spite of the doubling of the totalisator duty last session, is considerably less than it was last year, and the decrease is only further illustration of the opinion expressed at the time the increased duty was inflicted, that tho step would not assist materially, if at all, in augmenting the sum annually garnered from the racing public. The present trend is certainly "towards a, total collection for the season even smaller than last season's. Meanwhile the clubs are suffering intensely under the increased burden they are compelled to shoulder. For example, the amount the Wellington Club has obtained from the present meeting towards the sum for distribution in prize-money next season is only £14,491 14s, as against. £19,379 2s last year.. The sum actually paid out this year was £11,500, £1000 less than the amount proposed when the programme was originally drawn-tip, but a substantial credit balance,is necessary from this meeting, which is the club's principal fixture,'to'compensate for the relatively lower amounts obtained at tho other meetings.. "Unless there is unexpected improvement, the stakes offered next season must come down at least 33 1 : 3 per cent. Tho sum to be paid in amusement taxJ is not yet available, but the other taxes, compared with last year's amounts,1 are as follows;—

In the programmes, drawn, up early in the season by tho. club for. its Autumn and Winter , Meetings, the sums proposed to be distributed were £8310 and £9300 respectively, but the club reserved- to itself the right to revise the stakes and amount of prizemoney at any time before nominations, and it is now almost certain that this power will have, to b« exercised, as it was for the meeting just past. --
