SUNK OFF FLORIDA COAST

PASSENGERS IN WATER

United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. NEW YORK, 14th December. News from Miami Beach, Florida, states that 100 persons were rescued and three bodies recovered from the scono of an explosion on board the j glass-bottomed excursion boat, Eureka 11., which left Miami on Sunday with 135 persons on board. Tho police reported that approximately 130 persons wore thrown or jumped into the water. Tho disaster occurred near the shore off Bug Lighthouse, fifteen miles south of Miami Beach. YACHT TO RESCUE. Tho yacht Dorothea rushed to the scene and rescued 30 people whom she brought to Miami. The remainder of the passengers—men, women, and children —according to the Dorothea's crew, were left swimming about in the early darkness, attempting to save themselves. Coastguard boats hurried to the scene. The Dorothea's owner told pitiful stories of the Eureka's passengers attempting to board his ship. "We took every person we possibly could carry without sinking," he said. "SAVE THE CHILD." He stated that a man, holding a child iv his arms, swam up and bogged: "Don't save me, but save the child," but the yacht was already virtually overloaded. Later it was reported that other boats quickly reached tho scene and rescued approximately 100 people. They found three bodies, and about forty are unaccounted for. The rescuing crews reported that, after the passengers were tossed into the water by tho first explosion, many attempted to return to the wrecked vessel because of their fear of sharks. Then a second terrific explosion occurred, driving them into the sea again as the ship foundered. The man and baby whose plight was reported by the Dorothea were later saved, but because of the darkness and general confusion, it is impossible to determine the total number of casualties.
