THE BOYS' INSTITUTE

A large crowd took advantage of the opportunity to visit the Boys' Institute, Tasman street, last evening, when it was open for inspection by the public. Tho first x>]ace of interest' was the tepid bath. This was "ladies' night," and a good number of "water nymphs" were enjoying the . pleasure of swimming in the fine; spacious pool attached to the institute.- The games room, was the next to be visited, and hero wore gathered a large number of boys of all ages engaged in games of ping pong, table croquet, bobs, bagatelle, quoits, etc. A visit was then paid to the gymnasium, where the class gave a fine exhibition of gymnastic work, such as parallel bar and horizontal bar exercises ana vaulting horse. Other classes were engaged in games of medicine ball. The library and meccano club were next inspected. The members of this club were busy working on some very ingenious models, such as aeroplanes, cranes, submarines, warships, etc. The boarding establishment was visited, where everything was found to be in splendid order. At the close of the eveniug,"at the.invitation of Mr. and Mrs. L. T. Watkins, suppeiwas served in the dining-room. During the evening the band rendered selections in front of Ijie building. Mi-. P. Fraser, M.P., spoke a few words commenting favourably on' the work of the institute, and thanked Mr. and Mrs. Watkins for providing the opportunity to visit the institute arid seeing the valuable work that is carried on. .Mr. AVatkins suitably replied.
