SCHOOL TENNIS

ANNUAL TOURNAMENT

PLAY AT MIRAMAR

Children of every age and size flocked to Miramar to-day,wheu the annual tournament of the Wellington Public Schools' Lawn Tennis Association was commenced. Grey f/kics and a chilly south wind could not cool tho ardour of the youthful tennis enthusiasts, who assembled at 8 o'clock, and soon-after that hour twenty-six courts (1G hard and 10 grass) were in full use.' The advantage of teaching and encouraging the young generation in tennis has long been recognised, especially, so in Wellington, where the schools' tournament has become one of the most important features of the tennis year. This year the. entries number over 700, as compared with 1000 last year, but the drop in entries docs not indicate a falling ofC on the part of those /ixious to compete. It ■is accounted 'tor by the fact that the committee decided to limit the number of entries to six per school and two juniors, eight all told. In one respect only arc this year's .entries disappointing, and that is in relation to the juniors. Particulars of this season's entries are as follows: Boys' singles, .100.; girls' singles, 139; ■ boys' .doubles, 50 pairs; girls' doubles, 71 pail's; mixed doubles, 92 pairs. Juniors: Boys' singles, 13; girls' singles, 22; boys' doubles, 6 pairs; girls' doubles, .14, pairs. • . | The standard of play in the matches to-day was well maintained, and in many cases the contests wore very close.. Those who have played ' a big part in the. success of the tournament include Misses A. Hilliard (hon. secretary), Kelburn Normal School, and J. Swapp, Hutt .Central; and Messrs. Gosnall,.
