WHALING PRODUCTION

The remarkable growth of the world's whaling industry within the past ten years is shown in figures issued this week by the Committee for Whaling Statistics appointed by the Nonvegiaa Government to conduct investigations on behalf of the International Council for tho Study of the Sea. In 1919-20, the report states, the total world production of whale oil was 407,327 barrels, from a catch of 11,369 whales. Tho production for 1928-29 was 1,807,848 barrels of oil, from a cntoh of 27,566 whales. These figures show that, owing to improved methods, production has been quadrupled while the catch of whales has been' little more than doubled. The main development in the industry during the period reviewed was tho change over from land stations to floating factory ships. Since 1919-20, the number of shore stations has decreased from thirty-three to twenty-five, while tiie number of floating factories lias risen from six to thirty.
