"WE WANT ARCHER!"

UNEMPLOYED AGAIN

LETTER TO GOVERNORGENERAL

(By Teiegrapn.) (Special to "The Evening Post.") CHRISTCHURCH, 4th December. '. The unemployed, led by Mr. S. Fournier and some youths, again assembled outside the City Council Chambers today. They attempted to enter and see the Mayor, but eight policemen guarded the door and restrained them. The main 'purpose of the men in waiting upon the Mayor was to learn ■whether he had yet received any reply from the Governor-General to tho demand of the men that work should be provided for them until such time as they ..were given employment or sustenance underthe Unemployment Act. The cry went up, "We want Archer!" Finally, the Mayor (the Eev. J. K. Archer) saw Mr. Fo.urnier, who announced to tho remainder of the men that the Mayor ihad given him a civil answer, and had written to tho Gover-nor-General asking him to endeavour to provide work for all. The men then dispersed, apparently satisfied. During the time that the men were ■waiting, Mr. J. W.- Beanland, chairman of the City Council Works Committee, left the building and was loudly hooted. "When Mr. Beanlaud was driving away in his car some of/the men made a move towards him) and he called a policeman pver, but there was-no molestation. Apart from that incident, the proceedings were fairly orderly.
